The Imaginary Island Puzzle is a unique and exciting extension material for the Montessori geography curriculum. Both lower and upper elementary students love the open-ended way they can explore and create, while teachers love the reinforcement of geography vocabulary. Pieces portray the common land and water forms and are used to create river systems, mountains, coastlines and land bridges. Students use as many pieces as they wish to create their own unique island or continent, from very simple to complex.

The Imaginary Island Puzzle is printed in full color directly onto a durable polystyrene solid base - a safe food-grade plastic (think yogurt containers). This puzzle will definitely last. 84 multi-directional, non-interlocking pieces are 3”x 3” square, 1/8 th ” thick. The land and water form vocabulary is printed on the back of each piece. Puzzle pieces are also coded, representing four levels of difficulty, for easy sorting and staged exploration.

Along with the puzzle, you will receive a set of digital documents to support your students’ work with the puzzle. This set includes a compass rose, scale mile labels, letters and numbers for making a map grid with paper to go along, land and water forms vocabulary and parallel activities and extensions to go with the puzzle.
